CONTRIBUTORY PARENT (TEMPORARY) 173 VISA

The Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa 173, introduced by the Australian Government, is for parents of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen settled in Australia. This visa allows you to stay in Australia for up to two years.

It has a shorter processing time than Subclass 143 and does not require an Assurance of Support. The application fee is higher to cover medical expenses. However, you can spread the costs over your stay in Australia.

If granted this visa, you may be eligible to apply for the Contributory Parent Visa (Permanent) Subclass 143, if you meet the criteria.

The visa requires sponsorship from your child or their spouse. Your sponsor should ideally be over 18, a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. In some cases, a child under 18 may sponsor you.

Community Organisations Are Also Allowed By The Government To Sponsor Your Application If:

  • A senior representative within the organisation must agree to sponsor you.
  • The organisation should be legally established in Australia.
  • It needs to have been operating in Australia for at least one year.
  • Financial stability is a key requirement for the organisation.

To Be Eligible For The 173 Visa, You Must:

  • Have an eligible sponsor who is willing to provide support for at least two years
  • Meet the balance-of-family test by having at least half of your children residing permanently in Australia, or the majority of your children residing permanently in Australia
  • Meet the health and character requirements

The processing time for your application may vary as eligibility is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Factors that can impact the processing time of your visa applications include the time for external agencies, such as health and police services, and the Government, to conduct checks and provide supporting information. However, you can ensure a faster processing time by lodging a complete application with all necessary supporting documents and promptly responding to any additional information the Department requests.
