AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP

There are several steps to apply for Australian Citizenship. The first step is to check if you are eligible. There are only a few ways to become an Australian Citizen. The most common way is to be an Australian Permanent Resident and meet the residency requirements.

To meet the residency requirement, a permanent resident must have lived in Australia for at least four years. They must have Permanent Resident Status for the last year before applying. The Permanent Resident must not have been away from Australia for more than 365 days in the 4 years before applying.

Other ways to be eligible for Australian Citizenship include:

  • Born overseas to an Australian Citizen who lost their citizenship.
  • Came under the Commonwealth Child Migration Scheme.
  • Lost Australian Citizenship and wants to get it back.
  • Is a child who was adopted by an Australian Citizen over 18.
  • Born overseas but has at least one Australian Citizen parent.
  • Is a Refugee or Humanitarian entrant.

After checking your eligibility, the next step is to fill in and submit the citizenship application. You can do this in Australia or outside Australia. Some applications can be done online. Others need to be submitted on paper to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection Offices. You need to make sure you include all necessary documents.

Once the Department receives your citizenship application, they will arrange a citizenship appointment. At the appointment, your identity will be checked. You may also need to take the Australian Citizenship Test or have an interview.

The Citizenship Test checks your knowledge of Australia and what it means to be a Citizen. It also checks your English level. You need to score 75% or more to pass. Some applicants do not have to take the test, such as those under 18, over 60, or unable to take the test.

You also need to think about dual citizenship if the other country allows it. Some countries do not accept dual or multiple citizenships. However, Australia has allowed it since April 2002. Before 2002, if someone wanted to become an Australian Citizen, they had to give up their other citizenship.
