Only Australian Citizens can enter Australia without a visa. Everyone else needs a visa, including Australian Permanent Residents. Permanent Residents can stay in Australia forever, but they need a valid travel facility on their visa if they want to travel. If a Permanent Resident travels without a valid travel facility, they might lose their Permanent Residency status.

Resident Return Visa Application Resident Return Visas (RRV) are for current Australian Permanent Residents who want to keep their Australian Permanent Resident status when they travel overseas. The RRV’s also let former Australian Permanent Residents and former Australian citizens (who gave up or lost their Australian citizenship) come back to Australia and become permanent residents again. Applications can be made in Australia or outside Australia, but if an Applicant applies outside Australia, they must stay outside Australia until a decision is made.

There are two main types of Resident Return Visas: the subclass 155 and the subclass 157. Each visa type has different criteria, and this affects how long the travel facility is valid for. A Resident Return Visa can give a 5 year, one year or 3 month travel facility from the date it is granted, which means you can travel within that time only. When the visa runs out, you need to get a new Resident Return Visa before you travel.

Resident Return Visa Subclass 155

To apply for an RRV, a person must meet certain criteria. This includes being an eligible applicant (Australian Permanent Resident, former Permanent Resident or former citizen) and showing that they have either lived in Australia for at least two years in the last five years, or have strong ties to Australia that benefit the country if they have been away for more than 5 years. Strong ties to Australia can be shown through business, cultural, employment or personal connections. If a person has been outside Australia for more than 5 years, they must also explain why they were absent.

RRV Applicants who have lived in Australia for at least 2 years in the last 5 years will probably get an RRV with a 5 year travel facility. Applicants who have only shown strong ties to Australia will probably get an RRV with a 1 year travel facility. If a person gets an RRV because they are part of a family unit of someone who got an RRV subclass 155, they may get an RRV of one year or less.

Resident Return Visa Subclass 157

To apply for the subclass 157 RRV, a person must show that they have been legally in Australia for at least a period between 1 day and 3 years, within the last 5 years before applying.

RRV subclass 157 applicants who get an RRV will probably have a 3 month travel facility.
