PARENT (PERMANENT) 103 VISA

The Parent (Permanent) Visa Subclass 103 is designed for individuals who wish to live permanently in Australia with their child, given that the child is an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia.

Although this visa has the lowest application fee among all Parent Visas, applicants should be ready for a long wait time for their visa to be processed, as approval times can extend up to 50 years.

This visa is based on sponsorship, and applicants must be sponsored by their child, or the spouse of one of their children. Ideally, your sponsor should be over the age of 18 and a settled Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen. However, there are situations where a child under the age of 18 can be your sponsor.

The Australian Government also allows community organisations to sponsor your application if:

  • There is a relationship between your child and the organisation
  • The senior representative of the organisation agrees to sponsor you
  • The organisation is legally established in Australia
  • The organisation has been operating in Australia for at least one year
  • The organisation is financially stable

To be eligible for a 103 Visa and gain permanent residency, you must:

  • Have an eligible sponsor (as mentioned above) who is willing to provide support for at least two years
  • Be eligible to obtain a two-year Assurance of Support – a legal document that assures the Australian Government that you will not rely on the government for two years after you enter Australia on the visa
  • Meet the health and character requirements
  • Meet the balance-of-family test by having at least half of your children residing permanently in Australia; or the majority of your children residing permanently in Australia

The current waiting period for applicants is 50 years due to the limited number of spaces provided each financial year for permanent family visas by the Government. Applications are processed in the order they are lodged, and once the threshold has been reached, no more than 103 visas will be granted in that financial year.
